Merlin model 52 front hub

Post  blackjak on Mon Feb 04, 2019 3:22 am

Can someone please tell me the number and what size the front wheel bearings are (listed as part 910 in the spares book) on the Merlin. It is not mentioned in Goddard's that I can see. My bearings are very noisey and if I slacken off the cones on the spindle to reduce/remove the noise there is too much movement in the spindle. I have 10 on each side and about 1/8" total gap left over when the 10 ball bearings are fitted. The cones have minimal ware. Also can someone also advice what the difference is (if any) between the adjusting cone (2097) and the fixed cone (2098). My cones are the same.

thanks

Merlin Front Hub

Post  MoscowFlyer on Mon Feb 04, 2019 12:44 pm

Hi, I have a Merlin front hub complete, I've just been out and took one of the 10 ball bearings out and it measures 7.68 mm. and there is no gap between the bearings. the two cones are different, the left hand side one(opposite side to the brake drum) has two flats to hold a spanner and the other side does not.
