1963 2T Cruiser - parts needed and advice

Post  chrisbwy on Tue Dec 04, 2018 10:34 am

Hi All,

You might have read my initial topic on this bike...

http://fboc.forumotion.biz/t5469-hello-new-owner-1958-crusier-2t-bike-registration-help-photo-added

I'm in the process of trying to register the bike and recover the original number with "piston 197"s help, thanks.

I've got the bike home, it is in a partly dismantled state, but I have most of the bits in a box.

However I'm missing two items so far. Can anybody help please?

1. one tank badge "FB Coventry" and rubber mounting base

2. the small front chain guard piece 7566

Also when I removed the dual seat I can see lots of loose wiring, no battery. I assume that's where it should live.

Is there a battery holder? Can anybody describe or send me a photo looking down into the void in the frame beneath the seat?

Thanks again in advance,

Regards

Chris

Yes there should be a battery tray inside the bodywork, i had some made a long time ago, but they were expensive and now have all gone .

JH - thanks for the offer of a pair of badge rubbers, but I do have one that's v good, so I'll wait hoping somebody/eBay might turn up a single item (badge + rubber).

Peter - thanks for the offer, in theory yes please. I'd love to see a photo of what it should all look like to confirm what I'm missing. Any chance anybody? Cheers.

Chainguard - nice to know they are being re-made, but again, if an old one turns up with patina to match the bike, so much the better. All good info though.

Thanks all,

Chris

Chris

Yes that one will not fit your bike it is from a Plover 73.78 or 86 neither the rubber or badge will fit, there will be 2 used ones with rubbers on Ebay Thursday night around 8pm as i have just loaded them on to Ebay
If my offer of 2 new badge rubbers @£8.50p including post and pack is too rich for your pockets, you are likely to be disappointed in your efforts to find a badge rubber for less on Ebay even a single one ?
The small chainguard and the battery tray usually sell for about £25/30 each on Ebay as they are always missing and sought after, the chainguard gets taken off and not refitted, the battery leaks and the acid obliterates the tray, probably why you are missing these items on your bike.

Cheers Steve,

Great photos - do they correspond exactly with my 1963 2T Cruiser?

Is there a clamp to hold the battery into the tray?

Much appreciated.

The pics are of a 64 4T but I imagine yours will be similar if not identical. Not sure about the strap? I retained the battery with a shortened narrow belt (daughter's..) as below.

With Steve's photos checked out the bike and box of bits last night (my late father-in-law had partly dismantled the bike so I'm checking everything's still there and what's missing).

Battery tray is in really good condition, mounting location of two coils slightly different to Steve's photos.

One coil assembly still attached to underside of battery tray but other loose in box and missing it's internals - not sure why. So I need to replace that.

coils

Post  piston 197 on Thu Dec 06, 2018 9:34 am

The coils in Steve's pictures are the later Villiers brown type which were issued for the 4T, as yours is the earlier 2T you will have the larger black coils possibly ?

I think I have a couple of original 2t Coils if you are after authenticity

Re: 1963 2T Cruiser - parts needed and advice

Post  John Wakefield on Thu Dec 06, 2018 11:44 am

The old Villiers coils will be getting a bit 'tired' after 45 years or more, best to change them for modern ones as supplied by VS https://villiersservices.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_18_52&products_id=32 or other sources cheaper. (they fit lots of Jap bikes like Honda C90 or Yamaha Townmate, I used Townmate ones on my 4T engined Greeves and they cured a misfire problem with 'time expired' original coils)  As they are tucked away out of sight they are not really an authenticity problem, just needed new brackets making up. You would not ride on 45 year old original pattern tyres!!

Peter, John,

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I do like originality, but not at the expense of being stranded at the roadside!

Maybe the new alternatives recommended by John are the best way forward.

Sorry to be a pain, just building up my knowledge from you experts  Smile
