Falcon 81 Rear numberplate

Falcon 81 Rear numberplate

Post  FBKev on Tue Nov 13, 2018 2:53 pm

Does the Falcon have a backing plate like the James on the right or does the rear light attach to the guard and the number plate is held on with the screws and triangular pieces that clamp to the opening to allow the wheel to removed without removing the guard.

rear No plate

Post  piston 197 on Tue Nov 13, 2018 4:11 pm

On the Falcon 81 ( and falcon  87, and 74) the rear lamp ,Lucas 529, stays on the hump part of the mudguard, the rear No plate fits below and can be removed to get access to the rear wheel, it does not have the 2 triangular brackets on the side like the earlier pre 1955 models it just has two holes which line up with the holes in the flange on the guard and bolts direct to the guard. It is the same pressing as the 1949-54  bracketed type, it just does not have the triangular brackets

Thanks John
Looks like I will have make up a backing plate as the aluminium plate is the same size as the James and will leave an unsightly edge.

rear No plate

The original plate has a folded edge around the outside, flange towards the front of the bike about 1/4" deep and there ia a curved rounded shape to the bottom to fit a reflector

Re: Falcon 81 Rear numberplate

Thank you John. While we are here I have managed to find a 31A 4 speed box which I believe is a straight swap for the 10e 3speed (all part of the planned 250 conversion along with the 130 main jet), But I will need a different outer/points cover or will a trials type cut down do the job?
Thanks in advance.

gearbox swap

Post  piston 197 on Tue Nov 13, 2018 5:28 pm

Yes gearbox is a straight swap, you will either need another ignition outer case to suit the 4 speed box, or cut the back off your existing 3 speed one, you may need another Kickstart as well if the 4 speed box is the later one with the bigger spline ?

I have the original rear plate from my 81 hanging in my garage complete with peeling digits. Too sentimental to pass on though I'm afraid. It's a Coventry number too (XWK278) so particularly annoying to have lost it to a car..
