Just got another falcon

Post  FBKev on Thu Nov 01, 2018 7:37 pm

Just bought this on Ebay can anyone give me a rough idea of what Falcon it is, before I get the frame engine numbers, intend to pick it up on Sunday

Think it is an 8E model? if so would it be 4 speed?

At a guess I'd say a Falcon 74 from around 1957/58. If so it most likely has a 3 speed gearbox, although 4 speed was an option. Although it looks like its had a few changes over the years, those rear springs are almost certainly not original. Anyway, I hope its OK when you see it and have fun.

Its an 8E with 3 speed gearbox. The 4 speed (Albion designed) box had a different end cover

Yes it was an abandoned trials project, paid what I considered a very reasonable price not sur whether to trials it or use for spare and sell what I don't need.

3 peed gearbox not really suitable for trials and a shame to break up a fairly complete bike for parts. Is got most of its tin ware just need front mudguard, seat ans exhaust and it could be a runner

Picked it up yesterday as the picture really. Engine turns with compression. the socks are Fox air shocks (judging by the Schraeder valve on the body's. The plate on the mudguard is POW 542 which I believe is a Southampton number? (is there any way to search the number?) The engine number is not on the plate on the clutch cover, are they on the front engine mount area on this engine? it is still in the back of the car ATM  will find a frame number tomorrow.

More info

Post  piston 197 on Mon Nov 05, 2018 5:58 pm

POW registrations were indeed issued by Southampton CC between January 1956 and  March 1956
so fits squarely with a 1956 Falcon 74 which will have a frame No prefixed WM***** , yes the engine No is across the front engine mount on an 8E and should be a coding 070B followed by a further set of numbers printed below the coding.
The registration POW542 is not currently on the system with DVLA and could be retasined if there is supporting evidence prior to 1984 showing registration mark, frame No and make, with the V765 scheme
The only chance you have of this, if you do not have the old cardboard logbook, is the Southampton records office ( 02380 832251), even if they have records they will be no use if they do not show the frame No as DVLA need to see a record of both registration AND frame number, it is worth a phone call to the records office to see what they have, either way i can assist when you are ready to register the bike

engine code

Post  piston 197 on Tue Nov 06, 2018 2:19 pm

075B is a coding for a 197cc 8E engine supplied to James for a K7 Captain, right type of engine, just not the original unit for that FB

Have just been looking on the web and I found nothing for 075B so yet again JH I am in your debt. As I say I hav'nt decided what to do yet The tank is in better condition than the 81's headlamp shell, speedo, wheels all good forks appear OK the side panels are there but not the inner section nor is the rear brake assy.
