Pre War Cruiser - 17A - BYX prefix - +20 thou pistons

Post  fulmar88 on Thu Sep 13, 2018 11:25 am

Just spotted these for a 17A 250cc Pre war Cruiser with BYX engine prefix. One is without gudgeon pin by the looks of it. The second has one but it looks a bit crusty. I have no connection to the seller.

Thanks for listing that. Mine is BYF. I have a feeling some are cast and domed top and some Alloy flat top Pistons. Fingers crossed I don't need any.

Yes Ken. These aren't suitable for yours as yours is a model 39 with a 14A which doesn't have the flat topped piston. The 17A was fitted to the Cruiser model 45 from 1936 till the 18A came in (around 1939 I think).

Cruiser

Steve
As you seem to have a good understanding about the cruiser.  Where is the condencer? Miller system with points in the Dynamo? I don't see anything without taking to bits.

Was the original battery the standard almost square tall battery as fitted to most old bikes?

What's 14A and 18A ?
A meaning 250?

One of the reasons my Cruiser has lain idle and pretty much untouched for 15 years is that it is not complete. There are no electrical items /wiring fitted at-all from what I remember. So, sorry to say, I can't help regarding the location of the condenser or the battery type although there is plenty of room on the battery tray for the large square 'King of the Road' type.

I don't know the meaning of the A but they are all 250s.

A is 250cc (IXA,XA,XIIA,XIVA,XVIA,XVIIA,XVIIIA, 31A,32A,33A,34A,35A,36A,37A
B is 350cc ( IXB,XIVB)
C is 150cc ( VIC,VIIC,VIIIC,XIIC,30C,31C)
D is 125cc ( 8D,9D,10D,11D,12D,13D ( actually 122cc) 9D was also available as a 98cc to confuse
E is 200cc ( 1E,IIE,3E,5E,6E,7E,8E,9E,10E,11E ) can be 196cc or 197cc depends on model)
F is 98cc ( 1F,2F,4F,6F,9F)
H could be 225 or 250 ( 1H 225cc ,2H 250cc)
T can be 250 ( 2T,4T) or 325cc (3T)

Probably missed a few, but will give you a basdic idea

Ken as said above your bike has a 14A ( XIVA) engine 63mm bore deflector piston, the late models fitte with 17A and 18A ( XVIIA,XVIIIA) had flat top pistons
