Model 5 Forks

Post  woodenhead on Sun Aug 26, 2018 3:20 pm

Hi
This is just a query not sure if used on FB's but definitely on James.
Question were the fork bushes Tufnol or Oilite. I need to replace mine are currently Oilite or Bronze definitely not Tufnol.
Any suggestions on what is correct.
Regards

Model 5 ??

Do you mean model 5 ? or have you missed a number off your queery? Model 5 FB is a mid 20's bike with Girders ?
1949-54 FB upside down tele forks with rubber gaiters used Tufnol bushes
1955 onwards with hydraulic forks used bronze bushes.

James used Dunlop forks early on and i believe these were bronze bushed as well, by 1954 they adopted the same forks as FB

Sorry to confuse you John never gave it a thought that there was a Model 5 F?B. Will think before putting pen to paper next time.
These are the Model 5 forks I meant as fitted to James competition bikes 51/52 according to Simplywizard site. And I have them on mine but don't like them.

The bushes are worn so I was just querying what they were originally.

front forks

Mike, these were used exclusively by James, never graced a FB, i have a pair in my 1950 James cadet comp and the bushes in mine are Bronze, These forks are referred to as "dunlop" forks, they also did them without the leading axle arrangement, later they adoupted the FB forks, but used a different head bearing set to suit their frames
