AMC 250 gearbox

Post  william105 on Mon Jul 23, 2018 6:28 pm

Having trouble with my AMC cruiser 80 gearbox, when I select 1st gear it has a slight ticking noise and selecting 2nd gear is not always a success. The noise disappears when the clutch is pulled in, 3rd and 4th gear no problem, Iíve had the box out twice but canít see anything obvious. Any suggestions appreciated.

You mean a clicking noise when you are moving?

Has a gear tooth got a chip on it?

Clicking noise when bike is stationary and moving in first gear, noise disappears when I pull the clutch in. Same clicking noise if I push the bike with the engine not running and again goes away when I pull the clutch in, no broken teeth in gearbox. Gearbox built as per your excellent guide you sent me. Spacer required somewhere?

Well with the clutch pulled the input shaft stops turning. Are there any tight spots when you turn the gears? Still sounds like a problem on a tooth. Is the clicking fast so in time with the gears spinning?
Lot of work but you could remove the primary Chain and turn the clutch in gear and see if you can feel any tight spots. You haven't used any gears from a different box so wrong amount of teeth?

Just finished rebuilding the bike so first time the engine has run, the gears are what weíre in the bike when I bought it but surely if it was a wrong gear the box would seize. It all looks fine when the box is out and everything meshes nicely. Going to leave it for a couple of weeks, itís been out twice this week so time to give it a rest and start the Triumph rebuild. Thanks for your help.
