8E Rebore size

8E Rebore size

Post  Dadzee on Mon Jul 23, 2018 7:42 am

Hi Folks
I have purchased a 0.015 oversize piston for my 8E engine (The box suggests standard piston is 59mm). I plan to have it rebored by my local specialist. I expect they will know what they are doing but can anyone advise me what size the barrel should be bored to . I feel I should have some idea before I hand it over...to avoid any tears later. Thanks Ed

Rebore

That's a good question.

We just give out jobs to the engineers and it comes back normaly correct.

Does it not give a bore size on the +15" box?

You would think it would be +15" more than the standard bore.

I guess it could be bored and then homed using a piston ring as the guide to get the correct ring gap. Did you get the piston from Villiers Services? They may tell you the size if so.

bore size

Yes STD is 59mm to bore for your +015" piston the borer should bore to 59mm +015 with a tolerance of +001/-.000" but any borer should have the piston to check it's size as any object made will vary slightly within the manufacturer's specification, if you measure the piston at 90 Deg. to the pin at the base of the piston you should find it is smaller than 59mm +015 and already have the necessary clearance on the piston , with an air cooled engine it usually is 1 1/2 Thou/In. per inch of bore daimeter, so realistically on a 59mm bore your piston will be approx .004" smaller than 59mm +015 as this is the clearance, it sould measure approx 59mm +011"

Rebore

Good information John.

Yesterday I was talking to a trials rider who used the 8E and had his engine bored but they used  watetcooled spec and it would nip up every time it got hot.

Cheers John and Ken for your very useful advice and guidance. I shall print this out and take the piston plus literature with me. I am sure the correct size hole bore will be established (but I am sure they will know). Yes villiers did supply it so if in any doubt I will I will contact them

Thanks again Ed
