Falcon 81 exhaust help

Post  FBKev on Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:25 pm

Well it runs, and very well. Apart from the exhaust.

As can be seen from the photo I think it is off an earlier bike, the silencer is welded to the downpipe and the flange at the head end appears to be a badly beaten taper ? which I doubt would ever seal. I assume that the exhaust should be similar to the James next door? Villiers services list a Falcon 81 downpipe with baffle attached and Armours have a falcon 81 silencer without baffle. Has anyone experience of Armours silencers? as it looks like I need a 1 3/4" downpipe and a silencer.

silencers

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 18, 2018 3:00 pm

Yes i have experience of armours silencers ! they are bright and shiny and resemble the originals, but internally they are not the same and make a noise rather like sticking a biscuit tin on the end !

They are different to what is on the James

I do have a new old stock genuine silencer with excellent chrome i will be taking to the AGM at RAF Cosford next Sunday 29th if you are there you can view it ? you will also need a clamp and sealing washer as well as the silencer and front pipe, easily made, JH

If they have made it for the Falcon 81 with10E engine and have made it to pattern it should, but not the Falcon 74 with 8E one which is a smaller diameter bore

sizes

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 18, 2018 6:23 pm

It is indeed for the 1 3/4" pipe although the hole in the end is nearer 1 7/8" the recess takes a steel washer which has a 1/16" wall thickness location to take up the difference, later silencers used on the cruiser and Falcon with AMC engines did not use the washer they had an "O" ring groove about 1" in from the end, i have not got the washer, but easily made and i can send you a sketch

washer

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 18, 2018 6:39 pm

Kev i will put a sketch in with the silencer when i post it, but basically it is a washer the diameter of the recess in the pipe with a hole in the centre the diameter of the pipe and there is a location about 1/8" long at 90 Degrees th the washer face approx 1 3/4" id and 1 7/8" od, there is an asbestos ( or similar non asbestos modern equivalent) between the silencer and washer fitted over the 1/8" long location .
It will be clearer in the skethch !

Falcon 81 exhaust.

Post  Grahamb on Thu Jul 19, 2018 12:33 pm

Hi.

My Falcon 81 has the 1.3/4" pipe with holes .

The silencer is the type that has the "O" ring.

I purchase a couple of replacement O rings but instead of getting 2, I ended up with 20.
so if anyone is stuck for one let me know.

They are a very tight fit but with some lub they fit.

Regards Graham

Yes the later silencers have an annular groove for the "o" ring, but the first ones fitted on the 81,80 and 79 had a sealing washer, by the end of 1959 all used the sealing ring
