keyway problem

Hi all finally got my 81 Falcon to run today alas only for a short while before it sheared the keyway on flywheel again this is 3rd keyway change i got the new keyways from villiers services so should be ok dont understand why it keeps doing it

Keys

The Keys are not the problem, the Key is only there for location, to ensure the magnets are in the right relevant position to the coils, it is the taper fit which determines the locking, either your taper on the shaft or inside the flywheel is damaged, or there is not enough tightening force being applied to the nut ?
If the female taper is not clean or smooth in the flywheel or the male taper on the crankshaft no key will hold the flywheel .
On the earlier 6E/8E engines there is no key at all and these hold perfectly well when both mating surfaces are good

You have changed the KEY not the KEYWAY, the Keyway is the slot in the shaft

Flywheel

Try lapping it in with grinding paste. Coat the taper in coarse grinding paste and spend as much time as you can Turning it on the crank. Wipe and do it again until both surfaces show an even pattern. Then fit the key and flywheel .
Make sure the key is not do wide it binds on the flywheel stopping it seating.
Not sure what the torque us for that nut but be sure it's tight.

I have had some 80s Husqvarna's & the ignition stator was the same, some had keys some didn't! just set the piston  @2mm BTDC and insert a pin through the stator & backplate, the tighten the nut (mostly motoplat mini 6) If there was any doubt about the taper it was out with the lapping paste (the condition/fit of the taper was critical) Or you would forever have the timing slip at the most inopportune moment.

flywheel nut

The tightening torque is 62 foot/lbs

I use a strap wrench to hold the flywheel as recommended by villiers. You CAN bash the nut round with a "hammertite" spanner. You CAN bend the crank and knacker the threads too..

Your choice..

P.S. You must clean both tapers SPOTLESS. I use isopropyl alcohol. This stuff is for cleaning electrical stuff. It is NOT "contact cleaner" that will leave a lubricant behind...

Torque

Hi Ken,
I have got an original norton villiers maintenance manual. Villiers services do reprints of them too VEC 161 is the number of them.

Anyway, the units are all in inch/pounds, so need dividing by 12 to give foot/Lbs

Head bolts = 390

villiers magneto flywheel = 750

Final drive sprocket = 750

Engine sprocket = 950

Clutch centre nut = 390

Spark plugs = 145
