oils for F B with amc 250 engine

Post  stephenhopleyWS9 on Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:42 am

Just getting the bike back together what is the best 2 stroke oil to use and what ratio. I had it running with a 20-1 mix using Comma 2 stroke oil but was very smoky.

Also what modern oil is best for the gearbox and primary chain.

Thanks.

Its one of those can of worms questions which really boils down to personal preference. Some modern two stroke oils don't get on well with premixing. I personally use nothing but Castrol two stroke in my modern two strokes and have got 33,000 miles from engines and still going strong with no wear whatsoever to the internals.
For the older stuff likewise everyone has their own preferences, opinions and experiences and everyone's views are valid. Probably won't go wrong with Millers Classic Two stroke oil, its specifically designed for premixing

Villiers services also sell classic friendly two stroke oil

For modern oils to replace the obsolete grades listed in the manuals I've seen ATF recommended for the clutch and 20/50 in the gear box

No problem with Comma 2 stroke oil, I have been using it in a Greeves with Villiers twin engine since 1999 with no problems. Its a good pre mix oil two stroke oil. and readily available from high street stores & horticultural equipment suppliers. Stick with it.

What's not been mentioned in the posts above is the ratio. I personally use 25:1 with Silkolene Comp 2 oil. I've seen regularly mentioned on here 30:1, and even 33:1 What is definitely recommended is that you should avoid 20:1 with modern oils, no doubt hence the smoke.

Steve.
I also use the Silkolene comp 2 premix in all my bikes at 30:1 Even the Powerbike.
It's strange as the oil looks thin but if you take an engine bits everything is coated with this thick sticky oil.
Supposed to be good for bikes that stand so they don't rust.
