New 4T coils

Post  fulmar88 on Sat Jun 02, 2018 9:40 am

I thought I’d share how I mounted the ‘direct replacement’ 4T coils from Villiers Services (£17.50 each plus VAT). Additional parts required were a couple of 3 inch long 1/4” Cycle thread bolts and a few washers. This was the only orientation that was possible but it is clear of the body pressing in situ. I will shorten the lower bolt by an 1/8” as it’s very close to the pressing. I’ve added earth connections to the lower bolt for each coil as per the original set-up. Not so much ‘direct replacement’ but at least I didn’t have to modify the original parts, and used all of them except the original shorter bolts.

4T FB89 coils

Post  FB vincent on Sat Jun 02, 2018 6:20 pm

Thanks for posting this.

By the time that FB started to fit the 4T engine into the Cruiser frame the end of production was not far away, and there is no original FB User information that I am aware of for the 4T versions. There are some interesting differences between the 2T and 4T electrical configurations, which you have helped to clarify. Even more confusing are ex police bikes (like mine) which have the high output Villiers generator with DC Lucas ignition coils, rather like the Wipac system - once again, there is no documentation.
