Barrel nut

I do know it's 5/16" but can't remember the thread. It may be in the parts book.

why not try another nut on the engine maybe the nut on the carb stud or the nuts on the engine mounting studs if any fit then you have the thread you are looking for,
just a thought. Tony. Wink

Nuts

Post  kerabo on Wed Apr 11, 2018 8:24 pm

Looking at some pictures I took during my rebuild they look like bscy. Too fine for BSF.
On mine they are also special in that the heads are 3/16" and not 1/4" but guess normal nuts will fit.
If you pm me your mail I will send some info.

Reduced nut size

Post  piston 197 on Wed Apr 11, 2018 9:58 pm

The Nut size is reduced so that it is possible to get a spanner on them, if standard 5/16" threaded nuts are used they will fit the studs, but will be a Bu**er, to do up

Don't know !

Post  piston 197 on Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:54 pm

Truth o f the matter is i do ot know, but count ther number of threads on the stud over 1/2" diameter and x it by 2
BSCYC will be 5/16" x 26TPI
BSF will be 5/16" x 22TPI
so if 1/2" of stud thread has 13 threads they will be British cycle and if 1/2" of stud thread has 11 threads they will be BSF
Not rocket science

Barrel nuts

Post  keith livingstone on Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:45 am

Hi guys
Firstly forgive me if I'm way off the mark, but sounds like the nuts are similar to those holding down the 6E /8E barrels. The bottom half of studs securing in the crankcase are 5/16 bsw with the top half 5/16 cycle thread. Reduced size nuts but 5/16 cycle thread then secure the barrel flanges down. Here's hoping this might throw some light on your dilemma.

best wishes

Thanks Keith, ive since found that the top half of the barrel studs on AMC engines are 5/16 bscy and the bottom halves 5/16 bsf.
