10e oil seals.

Post  Grahamb on Thu Mar 29, 2018 5:47 pm

Hi again.

Is there any info on which way round the crank oil seals fit into the cases.

(There is no exploded view that I can find)

On the 50cc Raleigh engine I have they are fitted with the spring part outermost.
Is this the same with Villiers.

Many thank Graham

Crank seal

The spring on Villiers crank seals faces innermost with the plain side outwards on both sides of the crankcases

Graham, Recently having just rebuilt my 30c I put the new seals in the same way the old ones came off. after starting it was not running right and would not rev properly, we decided to let it warm up, after a while there was a loud Psstt noise and the engine stopped, luckily we were there and saw the cloud of smoke that came out from behind the ignition plate. Quick removal of the plate and I decided that the seal was obviously the wrong way round and letting the crankcase pressure escape, turned it round and hey ho the bike runs lovely.
Moral of the story is not to trust what a previous builder has done.

Very true Bill.

At one time I wouldn't have questioned it but with 2 strokes they are a dark art to me, so best ask .
