Help to identify Villiers Engine Number (8E)

Post  csharratt on Wed Mar 28, 2018 11:16 pm

Can anyone help positively identify this engine number? 2ST 41112

It isnt the one originally fitted to the bike ('56 Falcon 74) and I can't find any reference to a 2ST prefix on the interweb. I presume that the engine is a 197cc 8E?

8E i.d.

It is an 8E engine all right, but the engine number is from an AMC 25T 250cc engine, i would guess it was stamped to make it fit the information on a logbook with a desirable registration by a numberplate dealer some time in the dim and distant murky past .

Sorry JH have to disagree its clearly a genuine stamping and its 2ST not 25T.

spurious number

Post  piston 197 on Thu Mar 29, 2018 2:35 am

The stamper probably did not have a full set of numbers/ letters so used a "S" instead of a "5" it also looks like he did not have a "T" either and used the end of a chisel or screwdriver in an attempt to make a "T"
The stamping on an 8E would be like below

      070B
           12344E
where the 070B is on the flat vertical face and the 12344E is where your number is stamped on the angled front face , but to the left of the spec number .070B is just an example but the spec number of 8E's consists of 3 numbers and a letter ( A or B)
Your number is stamped in the wrong place is NOT an 8E engine number and does not have a spec number.

I do know what i am on about , you may disagree, but i stand by what i say and the reason you camnnot identify your engine number for an 8E is because it is NOT an 8E number, it does say Typhoo on some buses , but they are not a packet of tea

A good clean & much closer inspection may reveal evidence of the removal of the original stamping. Clearly not correct for 8E anyway.

Villiers engine identification

Post  FB vincent on Fri Mar 30, 2018 3:03 am

There are post war Villiers engine identification lists contained in Roy Bacon's book 'Villiers Singles and Twins', also 'Villiers - Everybody's engine' by Rob Carrick and Mick Walker. The authors note that their lists may not be complete, but as JH says, it is well known that prefixes 15T/17T/20T/25T were only used by AMC for their range of Plumstead built engines.
