Barn find - Merlin L51

Post  falconflyer on Fri Mar 16, 2018 12:01 pm

I have recently acquired a Merlin L51 which had lain undisturbed in a shed for 40 years. So far I have just given the bike an initial clean up. The engine turns and has the number 597/27407 stamped on it.

The bike is missing a few parts, in particular the headlamp and rear number plate c/w tail lamp. The cover for the flywheel is also absent.

Any suggestions as to how or where I might obtain these parts, bearing in mind that I live in a far distant land.

Thank you for you help. I am aware of Villiers Services but they tend to concentrate on mechanical parts.......?
I checked the frame number of the Merlin on the weekend and it is NK 42801. It is possible to precisely date the bike from this?
This is my fourth Francis Barnett as I have 3 Falcons, one from 1952 and two from the mid-Sixties but, to my shame, none is a runner at the moment.
Living in (the former pariah state) of Zimbabwe with no access to sourcing spares and decent services makes restoration projects in this part of the world very difficult.
I cannot see any means of posting a photo on the Forum. Please advise if this is incorrect.

Pre-fix NK makes it a Merlin 51 and a 1947 year model

Thanks John.

Confirms the date. Now just the missing and wrong parts to be sourced......!

Kind regards,

Peter
