Correct tank badges for a Falcon 87 1965

Post  colk2004 on Sun Mar 04, 2018 7:08 pm

I've now got a collection of tank badges and I've noticed they're all different! Corrugated red backgrounds, plain backgrounds, gold Fbs, silver FBs, different size Coventrys and Francis-Barnetts. Any one know which ones are correct? Mercifully you can't see both sides of the tank at once, and theres some touching up needed on all of them them.

See what I mean.

Cheers Colin

Fb Badges

Colin, the corrugated background ones were used by FB in 1954 first year of plastic badges, the smooth background was used thereafter the one on the green/white tank is the one you need, the paint fades from gold to silver on these badges as the gilding fades .

The ones that Geoff Venning now produces are the 1954 pattern ones as Steve Vernalls who originally made the mould had a Falcon 67 one to copy, most people are not aware of this and do not notice the difference.

I didn't realise there were two versions of the corrugated design, one with raised lettering and one with embossed lettering as per the later design.

tank badges

Steve, you mention that you will have to do some touching up of your badges, I think you will find it is easier to start from scratch (no pun intended) rather than try to match what you have already got. I have found that I get a much better result by carefully removing the existing paint from the back of the badge (I scratch it off with a scalpel), then repainting each colour in turn using -- nail varnish! Unfortunately the badge colours are not ones that I would use for my nails, so I have to buy them separately.
Have a go on a particularly bad badge, you may be surprised how well it will come up.

Regards, Mike Sayer.

Tank Badges

Post  colk2004 on Tue Mar 06, 2018 10:32 am

Steve?!? Thanks for the help. I guess I have a right motley collection of sun faded, copies, various years. SO I guess its find the best two, repaint the backs and go with that. Pity we can't get repro ones like the BSA ones which fetch about 10 a pair, as I've seen decent pairs of original large badges go for the 70+ mark on EBay - which I'm not paying for two bits of brittle plastic. If I get the red bright, everything else will be fine.

Cheers Col
