trials shake down run( a few teething problems) bike and rider

Post  Wafflojufflo on Sat Feb 17, 2018 4:15 pm

Hi

I took my recently purchased 1956 Falcon in trials trim (197 Villiers 3spd engine),to Hawks nest Buxton have a bit of a shakedown/ play, and had a positive/negative experience.

Firstly,positive,.... gears, clutch ,brakes, suspension all good,(for the age)..but general running a bit iffy,..and any advice would be great.

what i had problems with initially, was the engine wouldn't rev cleanly, and was mis firing back thro' the carb under load(at full throttle in first gear), also it would cut out now and again on low revs, and refuse to restart, until i removed and cleaned the plug (champion L6G).
then finally at full revs, the end of the exhaust,..(the pea shooter bit) blew off completely!! and it seemed to run a lot cleaner/free,.. but became alot harder to re start,..and would only bump start.

By then it was about two hours later, and i decided both bike and rider(exhausted),had had enough for one day,.....small steps etc

..any advice from the trials boys, gratefully received Smile

thanks Mick

Check to see if the timing has moved.

Yes, i would say weak mixture or retarded timing.. [Crank seals??]

Has this problem just started, or has it always been like it??

john..

Thanks very much for the quick replies lads, much appreciated
Den, Im in Spondon,..do you compete on yours?
Ken, thanks i will have to learn/read up on that
John, thanks, again its a bit of a learning process for me at the minute, but i will need to learn how to check these things,..it was the first time out for me with the bike,so not too sure if the previous owner had any problems,

if its something I cant get sorted by my self,do you lads reckon Villiers services, are my first port of call?, or is there some where more local to Derby ?,once myself and the bike are a bit better,I hope to have a bit of a play in pre 65 Smile

thanks again
Mick

Trials

Post  kerabo on Sun Feb 18, 2018 3:36 pm

Keep us up to date on your trials. I started endurance trials but very late in life. Good fun but the navagating spoils it.
VS can help but I don't think they will deal with the comple bike although I guess they have a test bed.
I would advise visiting a local member that is clued up for advice.
Is Spondon Birmingham?

Navigation

Post  piston 197 on Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:28 pm

Yes if you cannot get the county correct , navigation will always be a problem, there are quite a few instances of people putting a town like Coleford into the satnav unaware there is one in both Gloucestershire and Somerset !
