Post  AussieFB on Tue Feb 13, 2018 11:53 pm

Hi all, I am new here from Perth Australia. I have a FB which I am hoping I could get some info on. I believe it is around 1932ish? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Greg

It was my inlaws bike up until a couple of years ago,my mother in law used to ride it a bit in rallys. It then sat in a container for roughly 40 years in which I pulled it out and gave it a spit and polish. It took a little bit to get it running but is now running. It has a 148cc 2 stroke motor coupled to a 3 speed suicide shift. The tyres are about 45 years old and need replacing as they are solid haha

year/model

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:11 am

The frame No has an identifier letter if after 1930
1931=A
1932=B etc.

so will be easy to check the year, it is a bit more difficult to identify the model, Kestrel/Merlin the base model had villiers flywheel magneto, whereas the Lapwing had miller coil.
your primary chaincase appears to have been modified to take a magneto ??? difficult to see from the l/hand side.
There were two 150cc engines used at this period the XIIC and the VIIIC ( 12c and 8c) the engine No will help further, the engine type is also cast in Roman numerals on the cylinder

Frame i.d.

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 14, 2018 11:24 am

Ken frame No beginning A is 1931
think the engine will be XZ1578 , not X21578

this would make it a 8C engine ( VIIIC) of 148cc ???
the 2E engine was pre-fixed KZ or KZS

now it is also possible the guy has quoted the cast number off the cylinder rather than the engine No, get him to look again on the crankcase to find a stamped in number and then i might be able to tell you what he has, but the engine No. does not make sense !

XZ is a 2E engine number KZ or KZS is the twin port engine XZ is a single port.
My 196cc 2E has XZ3737 as the engine number.

Thanks for the info, the engine is an XIIC. I will check the frame number when I get home later. The frame number was hard to read last time I looked at it but for memory had a "C" in it.... I will also check the magneto and try and put a couple more pics up. Thanks again

1932?? Fanny B

I am "that guy" . The engine no.quoted is just as it appears on the crankcase. It's definitely a 2E (says so on the rear of the cylinder casting) and I'd guess that the engine builder mixed up his 2 and Z marking punches! The bike is a Model 17 Black Hawk, first registered on Jan 1st 1931, so would have been built at the back end of 1930. I understand that the new season's machines were introduced at the previous year's (November?) Show
