Villiers primary chain adjustment

Post  FB vincent on Sat Sep 23, 2017 8:15 am

I am sure there are many folk out there with far more experience than me on this subject, but here is one quote available online, although on the subject of engine tuning: 'Primary chains are another problem area in that they are prone to stretch, requiring frequent strips to reshim the gearbox to maintain chain tension. A minimum of one and a maximum of four gaskets being used to achieve 1/4" up and down movement of the chain.'

I have just rebuilt my 8E but with a 3 speed box. I used metal shim to get the correct gap and just cut it out and used instant gasket. It's supprising how little you need to make a lot of difference. I set mine at 1/4"
Remember to have a new chain and good sprockets as if you shim with old parts you won't be able to fit new without reshiming.

There were 3 prefixes for the 4 speed Albion box on the 8E, denoted by the first large letter.
S std ratio fitted to road and scrambles ( yours)
V wide ratio trials
R reverse 3 forward and 1 backwards gear

you have a STD road/scrambles box
