rebuild Kestrel 69 engine.

Post  johnh on Thu Feb 16, 2017 6:04 am

I'm a new member from Australia, I have a 1955 Kestrel 69 with the 147cc 30C motor and a 1955 Cruiser 76. The Kestrel has been in the family since new, The engine was rebuilt 25 years ago and its done negligible miles since then. unfortunately, it was not done properly, its never run well since then..
Its time to have it rebuilt properly because my son is racing his bike on the dry salt lake racers next year and I plan to run the kestrel in the pre 1955 vintage, 175cc class at the Dry Lake racers Australia speed week on Lake gairdner in early 2018 . no-one has run in this class so the Franny B will go in the record books regardless of its speed. I would like to see just how fast we can run it. the class requires OEM crankcase, barrel, head, and carby but ignition and internals can be improved/tweaked.. Can anyone recommend an Engine rebuilder in UK who could do this for me. I will also need to get the forks rebushed to stop shimmying at the breathtaking speeds that I expect the Kestrel will achieve. many thanks John H Adelaide Australia. ps The Dry Lake racers Australia have a great web site.

I am sure Villiers Services could sort you out. There is eletronic ignition out there now and V S are the agent for it.

I would suggest trying Nametab engineering, if you google that, you will find all details, he also builds Villiers race engines for Formula 210 GoKart, so may be able to get a bit more out of a 30C ?
I would definitely suggest going down the electronic ignition route

p.s if your cruiser is 1955 it will be either a Cruiser 71 or 75, the 76 was a Trials Falcon 197cc

Thank you JH and Ken, I'll contact both and see how we go.

re ps. The cruiser is a 75 with the 220cc motor, I bought it recently at an estate auction. it looks like it was restored years ago and then stored, it will be the subject of another post when I'm ready to clean it up because the centre stand has been butchered.
