Parts interchangeability

Post  Andrewwoey on Wed Nov 23, 2016 5:29 pm

Is there a FB parts interchangeability section on this forum?

I think this might be useful for people searching for a part for their bike, and have the knowledge that the part is also used on other FB models.

Andy.

Andy, a list would be a large work/ undertaking, best to ask individually
ie forks , wheels, seat etc as and when you need to know which items you need can come from which other models and makes

Parts

If the same part used on different bikes uses the same part number it could be done.
You fancy the job Andy ?

Part numbers

Post  piston 197 on Wed Nov 23, 2016 6:32 pm

BSA use a model pre-fix i.e 90-**** for the Bantam,42-**** for the Goldstar and it is surprising how parts from other models are used i.e not all Goldstar parts start 42, just the unique ones..
Ariels start with a pre-fix number i.e 29-**** this relates to the year the part was first used, and you can find some 20's and 30's numbers being used on 50's bikes

I may compare some numbers if ever I get some free time and see.
Just out of interest the part number for 8E main and gearbox bearings is the actual bearing number and is still valid

Yes i think it would be a big job. I was just wondering if there was any thing about, that people had already contributed to.
Atleast there is a fountain of knowledge on the forum that is willing to help people.

Andy.

Parts Interchangeability

Post  colk2004 on Thu Nov 24, 2016 7:31 pm

I have a nice booklet from the Reliant Scimitar owners club called 'Alterparts'. I believe it started as a small spreadsheet and grew from there as members chipped in. Slightly different in the the parts started from different marques of car in the first place. Not based on parts numbers so much as just dates and vehicle model - so an MG BGT boot lock fits a SE6a between year x to year y with a minor mod. That example came from me, as previous to me finding it out there wasn't one listed. I submitted it and at some point it'll get listed, but MG bits are easier to find than Reliant and so it goes on. Not so sure I want to admit my door handles are off a Morris Marina or Allegro but hey ho. Just needs someone to set the ball rolling and someone to start sticking the the parts in a spreadsheet where members can get at it.

Yes, its the same sort of thing i have seen on other forums. People chipped in when they founds that a part were also shared from another model. Part numbers are not much use with these old machines as you can't pop into your local dealer and order the part.
I have to admit that i owned an Allegro in my youth. It smoked that much, i just used old oil from a local fork truck hire business Laughing Very comfy seats though.

Parts Swaps

Post  colk2004 on Fri Nov 25, 2016 9:53 pm

Yep. I could be doing with it soon. A gearchange and kickstart off a xxx 196x will fit a 1965 Falcon 87. Very Happy

gearchange

Gearchange of a matchless AJS or Norton post 1956, will fit Amc engined bikes, but although the spline is the same, there are different lengths and bends

parts interchangeability

Post  mike Sayer on Sat Nov 26, 2016 2:42 pm

Just a thought, would it be a start to troll through the parts books for the most common models & list the parts (by part No. & short description) that are common to those models? One would need access to the parts books of course and if ,for example, I were asked to undertake the task, how would I get access to the parts books. At present I only have a book for the Cruiser 84, Falcon 87 and a Plover.

Parts

Post  kerabo on Sat Nov 26, 2016 2:49 pm

If we were to put each model parts with numbers on a spreadsheet they could be sent into someone and made into a list. If the order was the same it could be done.
The only problem would be the order of them.
Need a computer wizard to advise.
