Cruiser 89 rectifier

Post  Oily2471 on Fri Nov 11, 2016 10:53 pm

Hi I am a new 1963 Cruiser 89 owner and bought the bike as a good Project. The wiring is missing and most of the parts sitting in the battery box, my main issue being where on earth does the big round rectifier plate go? I have the square Villiers coils mounted under the battery Box already now to site everything else. Cheers

I assume you have the wiring diagram for the Villiers engine Cruiser 89 (although I think there are slight variations between the 2T and 4T engine versions).

The original selenium rectifiers on our bikes are now normally defective, allowing either a reverse flow (flattening the battery) or a reduced voltage. The modern bridge rectifiers are much smaller and more efficient than the originals but should be mounted on a flat metal surface. Since the generator output is limited, you do not need a sophisticated voltage control system. Here is one possible source: http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyelectrex.htm

Hi thanks for the reply and to answer at present I have no diagrams but will search the Internet. I do have a brand new plate rectifier though and would love to make the bike as original as possible. I guess it all fits in the battery box area so will see what I can find and what might fit where. I also need an air filter if anyone knows of a spare? Many thanks again Oily

You really need to have a copy of the FB Cruiser 89 handbook, contact the FBOC directly for a copy (although you may find one elsewhere). In the meantime, send me a PM including your email address and I will send you a wiring diagram of the standard 2T electrics. If you have a 4T engined Cruiser, as far as I know FB/James never published an update to the handbook to refer to this engine.

You don't say whether you have a 2T or 4T engined Cruiser 89, the air cleaners are totally different in design (the 4T version being unique to these bikes).

Hi, I have a User's Handbook for the Villiers 4T engine, it has a wiring diagram, if you would like a copy PM me your email address. Also I have close up photos of the air filter, which I can also send. Mike

Cruiser 89

Hi Oily2471

For information, I have had a batch of stainless steel front pipes manufactured. I can confirm that they fit both 2T and 4T Cruiser 89.
