Plover 95 Front wheel bearings

Post  Kevin B Smith on Thu Oct 13, 2016 5:09 pm

Hi can anyone help?

I have my Plover 95 almost ready for the MOT but the front wheel bearings are not great. It has loose bearings with cup and cone. The bearings are not smooth - I have tried polishing the spindle on a lathe and has used new balls and grease but I cannot remove the "notchy" feel to the bearings. Two questions:
1. Can I get new spindles and cups anywhere?
2. Can I convert to "normal" bearings?

Thanks.

Kevin

wheel bearings

Are you sure you have
A a plover 95?
or
B the correct front wheel ?
The plover 86 was the last Plover to use the small hub with the cup and cone bearings
The 95 should have the 5" hub which uses conventional roller bearings

The smaller hub can be machined out to take roller bearings, but not with the same spindle size, you will have to remake the spindle and wheel nuts in a smaller metric size ( I Have done it myself in the past) The only bearings with the correct size for the spindle are too big on the o.d. to machine the hub out without running out of metal

Plover 95 front wheel spindle

Post  Kevin B Smith on Thu Oct 13, 2016 7:31 pm

Hi,

yes I am sure it is a 95 - and yes I do suspect I have the wrong front wheel - especially as it has 4" brakes!!

However I guess the question still stands - and it looks like I need to machine out that hub then?

front wheel

Kev, it will be a better bet to change the front hub for the correct 5 " one, it is also possible if you have the wrong front wheel you probably have the wrong forks or fork bottoms ? if there are 2 cut outs in the bottom of the wheel spindle holes as you look from underneath then the forks are off an earlier Plover, in which case you are probably better off machining out the hub you have and remaking the spindle and nuts . If there are no cut-outs just 2 plain hoes then the forks are correct
The 5" brake is substantially better than the puny 4" item

Plover 95 Front wheel bearings

Hi,

Yes I do have cut outs so I also have the wrong fork legs - don't you just love old bikes!

Anyway I have just had a thought - I have found a bantam spindle that has the right cones and right threads - so perhaps the cups are the right size as well - and I have several bantam hubs and wheels - one for Friday!
