2T to 3T conversion

Hi all,

Is it possible to fit a 3T top end to a 2T bottom end? I have a spare 2T engine and gearbox, and some 3T barrels and heads., and since Triumph 3TA and 5TA engines have the same bottom half...

3T to 2T

Think from memory the crankcases of the 2T have to be opened out a little to take the bigger spigots on the bottom of the 3T cylinders ?

The 3TA and 5TA share the same crank, but you also have to change the Conrods so not quite the same bottom end ? Obviously you also need all of the top end to do the conversion ( Barrels, head, pistons etc.)

There is a change to the crankshaft sprocket which also means a new primary chain.  The fasteners for the inner chain case also change, this is to clear the bigger sprocket.  Also the steel barrel plates are different as will be some gaskets.

Thanks for the response. I spoke to villiers services, and they confirm that the conversion is OK, provided you can get the rarer 3T barrels. Fortunately I have a pair, so the engine is now with them. They advise a little fettling of the steel plate, and to increase the gearbox sprocket by one tooth. Maybe also go up a main jet size. Heads are the same if low compression are fitted, if not, fit two head gaskets.

I look forward to a bit more torque.
