I've rebuilt the crankcases rebuilt the gearbox and fitted the clutch side completely. Everything fitted apart from the rightside casings, gearchange and kickstart spring... The hole for the kickstart spring is at roughly 5 o'clock. Trying to wind the kickstart spring round it doesn't seem to reach. Question 1) where do I need the hole to be? 2) Can I achieve this without removing everything I've done so far, by removing everything on the right side, will the cover move or is it back to square one?

kickstart spring

The shaft that holds the kick start can go in in one of about 25 places depending on what tooth you mate the helical hear on its end. I never realised at the time of rebuilding mine and now my spring is weak because it don't have enough tension. The picture I made before I took mine to bits shows the hole for the spring pointing upwards but I can guarantee that spot on.

Hi Ken, hoped you'd be along for this one. You can hopefully see where mines currently at and it feels like too much of a stretch, but having put the whole lot together I really don't want to cock it up! Also is the gearchange ratchet pointing close enough to the dowel as it doesn't seem to be the same as yours but... it is in neutral at this point.

Gearbox

The gear change don't seem correct but if your sure it works. Does the plate turn over and sit in a different place?
Don't know what to tell you about the Kickstart. If it's too tight chances are it won't last. Mine comes back but if I accelerate hard it lays back and then sits up . If it's not coil bound with the kickstart on full travel it may be worth a try.
Was it you that never got your Directory?
Have you got it now?

Thanks Ken, I'd best get out and undo all the hard work to date - poop. I think if I move the kickstart shaft so the hole is about 7 or 8 o'clock it should reach. The gearchange seems to work, but I can check it when I'm trying to get the kickstart right.

Last directory I had was the second quarter Summer one which I presume is the last one, I always bang them in a binder before reading so they don't get lost.

The hole at 12 O clock would be a logical position. It would be a simple thing to remember on the assembly line and one of my old pictures shows that.

Thanks Ken. I can confirm that 'as near as you can get to 12 o'clock' works. Kickstart spring holds the mechanism in place to fit the end cover without losing the setting. Keeps the kickstart lever forward nicely, and allows the full swing without getting coil bound. Gearbox ratchet now points at the dowel in neutral as well.



New clutch cable to find, and new points to fit, then piston and barrel on and it'll be about ready. Next up will be building the wheels - which will be the first ever attempt at that little job.
