14A flywheel removal

Post  Mike Neden on Sat May 07, 2016 6:22 pm

I'm assuming that the nut undoes anti-clockwise?

Thanks

flywheel nut

I am assuming you are referring to the Brass flywheel /magneto retaining nut ( some 14A engines have a flywheel on the opposite side of engine as well) then yes standard r/hand thread nut, that will loosen and then go tight again as it acts as an extractor to self extract the flywheel from the tapered shaft .

Thanks John

It's the cast iron flywheel on the opposite side to the mag. It's on proper tight and I may have to admit defeat.

If it is just the nut that is tight, do not be frightened to get the "black and red spanner" on it ( or oxy-acetylene as some call it , heat works wonders !

Yeah, after almost breaking my back, I'll be getting my friendly mechanic to apply some heat. I need the nut to go a rebuilt engine. Is there any knack to doing it up? I was thinking of holding the mag side nut at the same time.

nuts

if you hold the mag flywheel nut it will probably undo rather than the one you are trying to remove ( sod's law and all that)
If the engine is out of the frame, can you not clamp the flywheel in a vice jaws
