Francis Barnett Super Sports TT

Post  dbrown7 on Fri Mar 04, 2016 7:29 pm

Hi all,
I have acquired a Francis Barnett with an engine that says Super Sports TT. The only other parts I have are girder forks, rusty wheels and exhausts and a silencer.
Does anyone know what year it might be and what model?
I do have an engine number and a frame number. I am guessing 1928-1930.
Are there still spares available?
I need petrol tank, oil tank, gearbox, engine cases and seat for starters.
Any help much appreciated or pointing in the right direction.
Many thanks
David Brown

The 172cc TT supersports engine was used in the model 5 and model 9 as most likely sources, you may well have the engine and frame No, and no doubt as the dating officer I could tell you more, but without those crucial bits of information I could only guess ?
suggest you re-post and this time state the engine and Frame no, the chassis No is the stamped in one on the headstock and not any raised casting numbers , prior to 1931 this will just be a 4 or 5 digit No. with no pre-ceeding letter

Hi JH,
Frame number is 20497
Engine number looks like;
Mk IP or MkH or Mk II it is not easy to read.
The engine number is 847.

I would like to fully restore it iif at all possible.
I can add it to my stable of Norton Rotary Cafe Racer, Royal Enfield Bullet, Triumph 750 twin Royal Signals replica and Zx7r.

Yes please any information about the bike would be great.

Many thanks
David

Hi all,
I meant to include the registration plate as well, it is GF 4565.
Hopefully that helps.
Many thanks

GF registrations were issued between March 1930 and May 1930 it will be a fair assumption this bike was registered when new ?
the frame No 20497 also checks out as 1930
The engine No you give makes no sense, it should be stamped into the crankcases and begin with the letters BZ for a 172TT supers ports engine,
If the engine is the correct one fitted into this frame , it would make it a Model 9, but same frame was used with other sized engines

Hi everyone,
Would anyone have a petrol or oil tank, or the dimensions of the petrol tank and oil tank so I can get one made or even can I borrow one?
I am struggling with spares.
Are there any spares about?
Is anybody able to assist?
Please let's know
I am at Kempton on Saturday if it helps.
Are there any Francis Barnett owners anywhere near Sandhurst in Berkshire?
Many thanks
David

petrol tank

Post  piston 197 on Thu Mar 10, 2016 7:14 pm

Andy , I have a few 1930 saddle tanks suitable for your frame , about 4 from memory, I will bring the best 2 to Kempton park Saturday, stall No 185 outside, walk down the race track rails until the grass ends, there is a holly bush cut into a Lollypop shape and a gate onto the race track, my stall backs onto the gate, I have a white Toyota hi-ace .
I usually leave around 3pm.

Re: Francis Barnett Super Sports TT

Hi JH,

I have googled various sites and I came across a Villiers Mk 1E TT Super Sports TT 196cc engine. That is my engine. From 1929-1959.
I guess that is not the right engine for the frame. It seems to fit, so, with parts willing and hopefully available, I would like to see about registering it and then restore it.
I still may need to beg and borrow some bits to replicate parts not available.
Any help much appreciated.
Kind regards
David

wrong

Post  piston 197 on Fri Mar 11, 2016 5:15 am

the TT super sports was always a 172cc engine , if the picture says "TT supersports with 1E engine," it is either the wrong engine, or a model 15 ?

Hi John,
It was good to meet you at Kempton on Saturday.
Many thanks for the tank. It looks good on the bike.
Still hoping some owners from the website will have some spares to sell or let me borrow.
Is there a model number of the gearbox?
Can you recommend a parts manual or workshop manual for the FB that I have?
Please let' me know
My email is davidbrown5@sky.com if that is easier.
Kind regards
David

gearbox

Post  piston 197 on Wed Mar 16, 2016 5:18 am

The gearbox will be a 2 stud mounting 3 speed Albion, I will have a look to see if I have one, there are numbers on the gearbox, but they seem to be random and to be serial Nos rather than model numbers

Re: Francis Barnett Super Sports TT

Hi all,
I stripped the Model 9 and arranged to have the frame and metal parts shot blasted. Unfortunately some of the rust was so deep that the shot blasting left some big holes in the frame spars.
Does anyone have any spare frame spars or does anyone know if anyone can make them up?
I am still looking for gearbox, auto lube oil tank, seat, wheels, handlebar controls, wheel spindles, engine cases.
Does a lapwing gearbox fit my 1930 model 9?
Any help or offer of parts much appreciated.
Many thanks
David

Hi all,
I have been offered a Francis Barnett Falcon gearbox and oil tank. Will it fit?
My FB is meant to be approx 1930 and model 9.
Are parts interchangeable?
The only Falcon I could find was after 1930 and it looked very different from my model 9.
Please confirm.

parts suitability

Post  piston 197 on Wed Apr 13, 2016 5:54 am

If the oil tank and petrol tank come from the same year, then they will be compatible, if from later year the oil tank will probably be the same, but the petrol tank may be different.
I have at least 2 and maybe 3 petrol tanks suitable for 1930 models if required

Hi John,
It's the oil tank, seat and gearbox that I really need.
I will check that the bike is definitely1930. I have asked for some pictures to be sure.

Petrol tank wise, I am ok with the one I bought off you at Kempton Park last month.
If you know of anyone else with any other Model 9 parts for sale please let me know.
Many thanks

might have a gearbox

Post  piston 197 on Wed Apr 13, 2016 9:33 am

Dave, sorry yes forgot that I had already sorted out a tank for you, I may have a gearbox/clutch as well will have a look over the next couple of days, I am assuming it is the standard 2 stud top mount 3 speed Albion one used on all of the other models, but will have a look, but definitely not got an oil tank .
