Could'nt make out why after tightning up the pinch bolts on the end of the Fork
the spindle nuts were still loose..??
I've been told these Pinch Bolts are tapered ??? In my handbook they make no mention of these bolts.
Can someone help..please.!!

pinch bolts

Post  piston 197 on Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:14 pm

They are plain 1/4 British standard cycle thread bolts, they should squeeze the slot up in the bottom fork sliders and this tightens the hole around the sleeve nuts stopping them rotating.
I think someone was thinking of the 1955 onward forks where there are two tapered collars inside the fork bottoms and these pinch up on the sleeve nuts as the later forks do not have a slot in them >

Worn Nuts

Post  ChrisTurner on Sun Dec 06, 2015 11:03 am

Are the sleeve nuts so worn that the slot in the forks closes up before the sleeve nuts are gripped? New sleeve nuts will be the answer if so. Chris

Thanks for your reply, Chaps..re worn sleeve nuts do we know what the original diam
of the sleeve nut should be?  -mine are 0.683".  I imagine the original size would have
been 11/16" / 0.6875".

While I'm at it, do you know a supplier of Fork Gaiters??     Many Thanks     Chris B

fork gaiters

Post  piston 197 on Sun Dec 06, 2015 8:30 pm

Fork gaiters are not a problem , you can use steering rack gaiter kits for front wheel drive cars, my trials model 60 is shod with a Girling universal kit which was part No TBR1000 sourced from Halfords, but apparently VW golf and Austin Allegro will also do the job ?
