Villiers 30C Spark/Magneto

Villiers 30C Spark/Magneto

Post  sampeek on Fri Nov 20, 2015 4:49 pm

So I am trying to get a Villiers 30C engine up and running. However, I cannot get it to produce a spark.

The magneto is producing electricity, but apparently not enough to generate a spark at the spark plug.

I have dropped the gap down from 0.8mm to 0.5mm, however still nothing.

When I touch the HT cable to the engine case and kick start, it is producing a very small spark.

Potentially need some new coils?

Any suggestions?

weak spark

Post  piston 197 on Fri Nov 20, 2015 6:24 pm

Possibly need new coil and re-magnetise flywheel, check timing is correct, arrow on flywheel to line up with notch in edge of aluminium back plate ,with piston at Top of stroke , points to be set at .015" fully open.
If the timing is out pulse point of magnetism will be incorrect when it passes the ignition coil giving a weak spark.
If timing is correct new coil and re-magnetise flywheel should sort it, worth getting new points and condenser at same time !

I will have a go at cleaning it up and adjusting the timing. If that doesn't work I will order a new coil. They are quite expensive though! How would you re-magnetise the fly wheel?

Thanks for the help.

This is not something you can do without the correct equipment, Villiers services can do this for you, cost is not dear and well worth getting it done. and can supply the coil for you as well !
Google Villiers services and you will find them

Villiers services also supply a full electronic ignition kit for the 30C, with the option of 6 or 12v.
I'm going to fit one to mine after xmas, i'll post on here when i've done it.

So I have got the flywheel re-magnetised, and a new coil to go with it. However, I am posed with the next problem....how do I get the old coil out? Anyone have any clues?

removing coil

Post  piston 197 on Mon Dec 07, 2015 5:34 am

Sam , you have to remove the coil back plate, and the coil is screwed on from the back, you will need to press off the 2 shoes at the ends of the coil, fit your new coil to them , and refit to the back plate .
