4 way switch on falcon 81

Post  jowett1887 on Wed Nov 18, 2015 6:27 pm

hey everyone,,new on this site..recently purchased a 58 falcon   and amongst a few issues i have is that the 4 way switch for the lights will only work with the engine running and not straight from the battery as i understand it should..also any ideas from anyone on a good replacement regulator for the original westalite one which i think may be on the way out,,cheers everyone

Rectifier

Post  piston 197 on Wed Nov 18, 2015 8:06 pm

You mean rectifier ? not regulator? there is no regulator as such, if the lights work when the engine is running and not when the engine is not, then that is a strange one? as the lights in P and H should work directly from the battery regardless of whether the engine is running or not and the lights work from the engine running only in the DIRECT position in the event of a flat battery. sounds like a wiring problem, or maybe a faulty switch ?, There are various threads on the forum regarding the fitting of a modern solid state rectifier, if you put rectifier into the search box you will find it pretty well covered .

silly question

Post  piston 197 on Wed Nov 18, 2015 9:00 pm

This s a daft question, but is
a your battery charged
b connected to earth
c connected to the switch, (believe it is connected through the ammeter) or the ammeter faulty,?
because if your battery is charged and connected to the switch your lights should work off the switch in P and H positions without the engine running,
If your lights are working with the engine running, obviously charging system is working ? does the ammeter show a charge ?

the ammeter needle seems to sit steadily in the middle of the dial..i assumed the battery is charged but thanks i spose it is possible that it is uncharged,,or not earthed ,,cheers
