external coil

external coil

Post  tealbug on Thu Mar 12, 2015 2:02 pm

I have sorted my carb needle position and my 1st gear jumping out with a bit of grinding of the dogs, then I found I had the warm starting problem so I mounted an FS1E coil onto the frame and ran a wire to the common connection on the points, this gave me no spark at the HT lead, all is OK if I disconnect this wire and revert to original coil, I have not yet taken off the original HT winding as I wanted to have both systems temporarily, is this the problem? when I connect new wire the original system doesn't work either ! help would be appreciated.Gordon

external coil

Firstly check your coil and see if it is 6volt AC, and not 12 volt or DC, then check it is ok and not shorting to earth ( is it a known good coil , i.e. does it work on another bike ?) I have only done the external coil conversion after stripping the HT windings off, so cannot comment whether both systems can be left in place ?

External coil.

Afternoon.
I doubt that the original LT coil will generate enough power to drive two HT coils, also if the first one (the original) is shorted then this will prevent your new additional one from working. You need to remove the old HT windings in order to use your modification.

I have now unwound ht coil, still a weak or non existent spark, tried parallel connection to lighting coil still no joy I will now try new original type coil. by the way the external coil was new.

still weak spark

Post  piston 197 on Sat Mar 14, 2015 12:18 pm

Might be worth having the flywheel re-magnetised ?? if spark is still weak with a new external coil ?

External coil.

Afternoon again.

As JH suggests could be weak magnets, have you checked the capacitor - needs to be new, ( NOT new old stock! ) and well earthed - any car one will do for testing purposes. Failing that re magnetise!
