Frame Numbers and Model details

Post  Martyn Vincent on Wed Dec 10, 2014 7:53 am

I have a complete Francis Barnett. It has not been run for a few years. The bike has been owned by my father for the last 50 years. The registration papers are difficult to read the dates, but it looks like it was first registred in 1952.

The frame number PN16865.  Engine number 189A18919.

Could you provide details of the model, engine etc.  How long was the model produced, original colour etc.

Thank you

Martyn

frame / engine No

Post  piston 197 on Wed Dec 10, 2014 6:48 pm

PN frame No denotes a model 56 powerbike made between sept 1949 and August 1950, this would have had the Villiers 2F single speed 98cc engine with code beginning 801, the following year sept 50 to August 1951 frame No was RN pre-fixed and had engine No beginning 189A as yours has.
Are you sure the frame No is PN or is it actually RN, both could have been registered in 1952, but neither would have been made in 1952 and may have sat usold for some time ?

Thank you. The frame number could begin with RN. There is a mark on the frame just below the letter which makes it difficult to see if it is P or a R. It could be a R though. The bike was first registered in New Zealand in 1952, and so there could be a delay between manufacture and being registerd in New Zealand. It could have been used in England before being taken to New Zealand. That would explain the date difference.

What is the model name.?

Thank you for your help. It is the begining of a restore process. That is the first step to identify the model.
