Flywheel Removal

Post  millsj22 on Fri Jul 25, 2014 4:06 pm

I have just tried to remove the flywheel from a Villiers 30C engine.  I have the hammer-tight magneto spanner and a good strap wrench and I managed to free the nut in the centre of the flywheel no problem.  However the flywheel seems stuck on the taper.  Does anyone have advice for freeing a flywheel which is stuck on the taper?  Is there a special knack? I have had no problems before with flywheel magnetos but this one is being very difficult. I am reluctant to try heat as I might damage a nearly new HT coil and I also don't want to damage fragile alloy castings.  Advice from experts appreciated.

Success! Squirted penetrating oil at the top of the taper, had a cup of tea, returned to the flywheel 15 minutes later and it came off without any difficulty. That's old machinery for you!
