Old Photos

Post  fulmar88 on Wed Jan 30, 2013 12:37 pm

Chaps, Just stumbled across the following collection of old photos via the Historic Coventry forum. Haven't had a proper look yet but lots of photos I've never seen before. Could be FB factory shots or magazine shots maybe. I've put a link below. You may have to search Francis Barnett or possibly just click the 'next' arrow.

I've just noticed the reg on a picture of a Red Stag. BHP 313 is a Coventry bike I recognise from trips to the Records Office. It was first registered by Francis Barnett, and was in a magazine at the time (The Motorcycle?? - I have a copy at home somewhere).

So could be FB brochure shots??

Just found DVC 91 (J45 Cruiser) which I have a note was also in a magazine (Motorcycling?).

I would imagine these are FB pictures and the bikes were Press bikes for the various publications to try.

On one of the photos there are 3 bikes at a Scottish trial. You can only just read the reg of the one on the right (no. 30) but it is the same bike that appeared in a 1927 FB publication called Mountaineering (WK1717).

BVC 313 was also first registered by the factory on 23-07-1936.

AWK 461 was first registered to FB on 03-04-35. Stag 44. It started life with engine no. BP122 which was changed to BP114 on the 20-08-35.

I think we may have found some pictures taken at the factory (at last), of factory owned bikes.

Hi Steve, this is a really interesting web site, there are loads of photos of F/Bs in new condition plus many others, only trouble is finding them. they are not very well catalogued, I have trawled through some of them, but as there are 5920 of them it's difficult. When you put Francis Barnett in the search under Category Bike, you get quit a few, but not all. If anyone comes across an F/B, just jot down the Catalog # and put it up here for us to see. Here are some I found, one is of a guy trialing a Cruiser Model 45. Mike

Mike, Can you check the codes you posted? One is of a truck rather than a Cruiser.

Another?

aao793, and aaq648 (cruiser hiding centre of float?)

Sorry about that Steve, it's abe461 and aaq344. It comes up as a small pic, but if you click on it, it enlarges. Mike

John, they're not reg numbers. They are the codes for individual pictures. Just type the code into the search box on the website.

Thanks for that Steve, bet Colin would like to see this photo. The chap on number 30 is Mr D MacQueen who was from Dalkeith near Edinburgh, it was him who rode that bike to the top of Ben Nevis. He is also in another photo, but on a different bike number 53, WK 4349. Mike

Steve, have a look at the building in the background of this photo, it looks very much like how the F/B factory was built? Mr MacQueen on WK 4892 this time. Mike

black finish

Post  piston 197 on Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:34 am

Bill ,never seen it before, the early Merlins originally had one piece exhaust/silencer ,this changed quickly to a detachable silencer to enable them to be removed easily for de-coke,but never seen Black silencers, could understand the flywheel plate being black ,but the flywheel ?? how would you see the timing marks?,maybe just a few ideas being tried out by the factory that never made it to production ?? Guess only,JH

After searching through 500+ pics (not yet completed) using only the search word 'isdt' I found these two gems. Can you tell me exactly what model they are JH please?

This is one of 3 bikes prepared for the 1955 ISDT reg No's MHP 469,470 and 471,i have 470,469 is still in existence and 471 has been recreated, they were used in 54 as well, but had different forks and front wheel then,if you look at the first pic in Arthur Gent's,book you will see my bike ,it was not finished at the time of the pic ,but looks every bit as good as the original now,JH

I knew it looked familiar. I saw your bike at Gaydon last year. Shame we can't see the reg. no. but nice to see a factory prepared bike ready for action. Hopefully there's a few more photos hidden in the website somewhere.

The pleasures all mine John. I haven't done a lot at work since we found the website. I'm sure there's a few more pics to find. I ordered a pic of the unregistered Cruiser 45 (1936??) As it will help with my restoration. I didn't know for instance that the exhaust was a gloss black. Always assumed it was matt, not sure why.

My Cruiser pic came today. I ordered A3 so a bit expensive but I can even see the trademark number on the tyre. Very happy.
