kestrel 66 project complete

Post  Bill on Thu Jan 17, 2013 4:40 am

With the help of members of this forum my Kestrel 66 rebuild is now finished. Not exactly as it left the factory but that was 58 years ago. Okay took me over 2 years but it was fun. Thanks to all who gave me information and assistance including those who's posts I didn't contribute to but the information contained within was invaluable.

Now to start the Merlin 51.

Nice job Bill. Looks clean enough to eat your dinner off. Is this a show piece or are you intending on riding it?

kestrel 66

Post  piston 197 on Thu Jan 17, 2013 7:47 am

The Kestrel 66 (VRB 909) was my first restoation too,i was given a 13D engine and refurbished it,then fitted it into a Bultaco chassis, but the engine deserved better,so i bought a dismantled 66 and restored that.
This was what got me first into the FBOC,must have been about 1984/5
Have come full circle now and have a real weakness for oily rag unrestored bikes, although i have just finished restoring George Fishers ISDT francis Barnett, but that had been set about by hooligans and ridden around the fields.
It is so difficult now to find a nice honest bike, that some well meaning person has not dismantled,or has been in the hands of the "chromosexuals"

Thanks for your positive comments. Kim I have not ridden a bike for over 45 years let my license lapse and Sydney traffic is not the place for a senior citizen to learn again, that said I am tempted to do a few laps of the block from time to time.

Re the centre stand its not original so still have my eye out for one so if any one has one for sale I would be interested although postage from the UK could be prohibitive. The rubber buffers are to stop the bike walking all around the garage when the engine is running and its on the stand.

Kestrel 66

Post  bessybarnett on Fri Jan 18, 2013 8:06 am

Well done Bill, I hope my Kestrel 66 looks like yours when it's finished. My wheels came off (the Kestrels I mean!) a couple of months back to continue the restoration, but it has stalled again with yet another distraction, cos the memsahib wanted me to do some decorating over the winter!! - I will get there, at least I have got a stand! Smile

Anyway great job and look forward to your next project.
