Villiers 13D (12D) gearbox oil

Post  Bill on Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:28 am

Hi my Handbook lists SAE 140 oil for gearbox and primary chain case which seems a bit heavy to me. I have found Penrite have a T140 transoil for vintage and veteran vehicles has anybody used this product.

oil for gearbox

Bill i have always used 20/50 multigrade in the gearbox and automatic transmission fluid in the clutch on road and competition villiers engines with no adverse affects ,140 is like treacle certainly would not use in the clutch, would get away with it in the gearbox though,JH

Oils

In those days there was nothing better. Now you have some good oils to use. I would go like John says and also use ATF in the clutch.

. I agree with every word of JH's statement. For one thing, clutch corks get along real well with ATF. But for the transmission, I would look for a fully synthetic 10-50 or 15-50 motor oil. Synthetic oil seems to survive the slicing and dicing of the oil which goes on amongst the gears and the dog clutches. Smile

Would this apply to a Villiers 8E gearbox as well?
