Hi have just picked up tool box in photo but it appears to be too big for the Kestrel
can anyone confirm the Kestrel size

Looks like the right one to me,certainly the right shape,but may be off the falcon,the James version of this bike (the J15 cadet),uses a smaller kidney shaped toolbox,but the Kestrel definately uses the bigger one certainly of this shape,but have no info on sizes ,basically does it fit?
other different parts between the James and FB are exhaust,silencer,rear mudguard (different rear light fitting) and obviously the tank,transfers ,colour scheme and frame number ,JH

The one you have appears to be from a merlin 52 or as JH says it could be falcon 54 as well. The measurements are the same as my merlin. Theres a picture here..... https://2img.net/h/i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m514/kimgarvey1/merlin.jpg

i have just had a look at mine and your measurements seem to tally with it, i think it is kestrel, only thing i`m not sure of is the top mounting, couldnt see mine cos it was abit dark in the garage, sorry

I cant use any of the current mounts as they are and it looks larger than ones I have seen in Kestrel photos,
thats when I line up the curved side with the front of the rear mudguard.
I would consider selling if I could find one thats slightly smaller which I think the original Kestrel one was, or swaping for correct Kestrel one

the falcon 54 1949 tool box is 8 inches by 6, in place of your 9 by 6.5 inches
