Post  Bill on Wed Jan 05, 2011 7:59 am

Hi does any one know where I can get a couple of above I believe original part no 001684.
Are the seals an interferance fit on the fork or are they screwed on.
Thanks in advance

(The seals were made by Payen, the gasket people, they are an interference fit (pressed on)they can be drifted off with a piece of wood or aluminium and a hammer,i have had them in the past ,but have none left, although i do have some still left for the 1948 to 1954 merlin and falcon(these are bigger in diameter and will not fit the kestrel). The seal you are seeking is not made any more so you will be relying on finding new old stock, might be worth trying ,vale onslow (sparkbrook, birmingham)JH

Perhaps JH can advise whether the Payen fork seals currently on ebay (item 370472863539) are what you are looking for. Sandy Ross

Hi John thanks for all your good advice. I emailed the seller re the dimensions who said the they suited a tube size of 1 1/4' with ID of .820 the inner shaft on mine is .875".This would make them the same as mine if we are talking the same meausurments. is it possible the forks on my bike are from a different model.

no the forks on yours are correct 7/8" diameter, the falcon and merlin ones are 1 1/8" and i can see X149 on the side of the Payen box in the ebay picture, which is the bigger ones? ,maybe wrong box ,maybe odd seals ,?has he measured both seals or just one?JH

I think he only measured one as he has only listed one but has said he can supply two so I will bid and see what happens
will let you know the results if I win. regards

Unfortunatly I did not win the E Bay auction so can't elaborate on size they went for 17 GB pounds. A bit much for this Aussie lost all my money on the cricket. We can't complain they were far too good for us.

kestrel fork seals

I thought I would share how I overcame lack of new fork seals. "With the risk of telling people how suck eggs".
I was able to buy from local bearing outlet a couple of seals .875"x1.25"x.25"
which I fitted to the old seal metal outer I removed the old moulded rubber seal by burning it with a propane tourch and cleaning out the charred remains before fitting the new seals. worked a treat.
