Return Spring

Post  Malfisher on Wed Dec 08, 2010 11:14 am

Anyone got one of these springs or know where I can get one? Mine was working but weak, and theres a split in it. I was told to try Martyn Bratby but have called a few times now and all I get is answerphone. Theres AMC ones on Ebay, but they dont look exactly the same.

Malc

Have you tried vale onslow's shop?

I needed a pawl spring and a gear return spring, they were able to get them both for me.

But, my gear return spring does not look like that one you have in the pictures...

Looking in my parts book the springs I needed were:
Pawl spring - 541327
Foot change pedal return spring - 541328

Return Spring

Malc, if it is the kick start return spring, it is the same part number 040043 for the 17T,20T and the 25T.
Kelvin, that is interesting because the Pawl spring number is 041327 and the Gearchange spring is 041328, in my book. These refer to the Francis Barnett and yours to the James, but the spings will be the same. Mike Cool

Return spring

Malc

I bought 3 of these 2 for me and one for a member that lived in South Africa. Bantam John had them and on this occosaion they were with me in less than a week. About 7.00 each from memory. Dont expect them to be very strong the new one was not a lot better. Take note there is an O ring in the case when its removed that seals it and also on on the kickstart spindle. I think the secret is to put the lever on well forward so its own weight keeps it up once you running.

Hi
040043 available from jampot spares for for 4.50 +vat +p&p Cheaper that from Bantam John and you dont get the attitude
Remember the amc 2 stoke and AJS lioghtweights shared a lot of parts and the same part numbers, I got an awful lot from Jampot spares when I did my Cruiser
Regards
Mike d.
PS they also have the return spring as part no 041328 at 4.12.but not the pawl spring I had the last one a while ago.

Sorry to butt into this conversation....

Woodenhead, what sort of experience have you had from Bantam John?

I've read on the internet that he is not a very pleasent bloke.

If looking for a particular part it may be a good idea to reference both part numbers just in case one of them isn't avaliable, if you get what I mean...

Hi
I phoned him on a wednesday morning to order a part I knew he had and asked if could bring down to Kempton on the saturday. His attitude was the vans packed and i'm not putting anymore on, you phone most other suppliers on a friday afternoon and they'll have it ready for you the next day.
His attitude at jumbles is sometimes no better.

Hi Mike

I phoned him today asking about some pistons for the James, he had a "can't be arsed" tone to his voice, there was none of the "Good afternoon, how can I help" or "how are you doing?"

But he did have pistons avaliable, even if they were expensive.
